Bathrooms Suites - Being Green Clean
Going Green has never been so important - and the bathroom is one place you can make a difference

Bathroom suites may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to going green, but the bathroom is a great place to start to reduce your carbon footprint and become more energy efficient. As well as helping the environment, you’ll reduce your water bills!

Basic bathroom suites usually consist of a bath, shower and toilet – all of which use huge amounts of water, but there are water saving devices you can use to help reduce water waste.

Bathroom Suites: Toilets
If you’re buying a new bathroom suite, invest in a modern cistern with a dual flush system – this gives you the option for a shorter flush. Toilets can use up to 9 litres of clean water with every flush. A dual flush cistern could save you 3 litres of water every flush. If you’re not buying new bathroom suites, how about investing in a ‘hippo’ which you simply place in the cistern to reduce water flow. One top Green tip is to only flush when you have to!

Bathroom Suites: Showers
Whether you are buying a new bathroom suite that consists of a shower, or shower above your bath – make sure it’s a good shower because you’ll be using it more. It’s far greener to shower than take a bath. However, power showers can use a lot of water – especially if you take long showers. A five minute shower is the optimum time – it uses around a third of water that a bath does (as long as it’s not a power shower). It doesn’t mean you have to give up baths – they’ll simply be more enjoyable if you save your long soaks for special relaxing occasions.

Bathroom Suites: Flooring and Furniture
For really green bathroom suites opt for natural flooring such as linoleum instead of synthetic resources like vinyl. Bathroom furniture is a great feature for large bathrooms – why not opt for sustainable harvested wood which looks great and is eco-friendly.

Bathroom Suites: Clean Green
Cleaning bathrooms is crucial to keeping them hygienic, safe and enjoyable to use. But you don’t have to attack the grime or lime scale with harsh chemical cleaners. Everything you wash down your sink, shower or toilet will end up returning the earth – so invest in eco-cleaners that use natural products. If you want to be cost effective, you can use your own cleaning solutions. Lemon, vinegar and baking soda are all effective natural cleaners. And don’t just think about bathroom cleaning products – consider using plant-based shampoos and soaps too.

Other eco bathroom friendly tips:
Don’t leave the tap running when you’re brushing your teeth – it’s not necessary, and you can save on your water bills by being more water-wise.
Similarly, fill the sink using the plug when you wash your face, rather than letting the tap run freely
Never flush items down the toilet, including sanitary products
If you have a leaking tap or shower – think about investing in a new bathroom suite – leaking taps can waste up to 4 litres a day!

Bathroom suites on a budget
If you look in the right places, you can get great bathroom suites without breaking the bank.

Of course, you can spend tens of thousands of pounds on your bathroom if you have the money available – but if you’re restricted to just a few hundred pounds, you can still get a great look and great performance from your bathroom and buying a good bathroom suite is the place to start.

Bathroom suites to suit all tastes
Whether you’re looking for a traditional bathroom, with Victorian taps and dark wood finishes, or a sleek contemporary style with designer fittings, you can achieve your dream look on a budget. It may take you some time to do the research you need, but it’s worth it when you see the finished bathroom and know how little you’ve had to spend to get it right. Choosing your bathroom suite is important because it’s probably where most of your money will go. Try to think about some of the following:
Style – decide what look you’re trying to achieve in your bathroom. Bathroom suites come in all shapes and sizes, so take a look in magazines and stores before you decide what you want.
Bargains – look for places where you can get the sort of bathroom suites you want at cheaper prices. You may get a great deal online, particularly if your suite is end-of-the-range. You may also be able to get a good deal on “seconds" where there are slight flaws to the suite – but not ones that anyone else will notice.
What do you need? – think about what you really need, because you can save money on bathroom suites if you cut back on what you buy. Do you really need a bath, for example, or will a shower do? How big does your basin have to be – can you save money by buying a smaller basin? Look for all the ways you can to cut the cost of your bathroom suite.
Budget – it’s important to know how much of your budget you can allocate to buying the bathroom suite. If you can get a good deal on tiling, or radiators for example, you could put the savings towards a more expensive suite. You could also look at sourcing everything from one supplier, saving you money on delivery, for example.
